DESCRIPTION

Clean and sanitize cages, pans, lids, etc; sweep, mop, and sanitize floors, walls, sinks, etc. Water and feed animals, checking cages daily for food and water; report sick/dead animals to supervisor or on call Animal Health Technician (AHT). Assist with the care, husbandry, and maintenance of transgenic/knockout mouse colonies in barrier facility; rats; fish; and other animal models as needed. Perform or assist with euthanasia and disposal of dead animals. Perform vivaria maintenance and housekeeping duties.

Support the Drosophila media Prep Kitchen & Stock Center. Receive, autoclave, clean, and wash used Drosophila media vials for reuse. Assist in the maintenance of fly stocks and preparation of Drosophila media in response to research laboratory orders. Help maintain records of orders, safety, inventory and supplies. Participate in documenting, and monitoring of facility and operational safety procedures.Perform general laboratory cleaning and maintenance.

  • Occasional evenings and weekends may be required.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Sensitivity to and knowledge of the needs of caged laboratory animal in compliance with Association for Laboratory Animal Care (AAALAC) standards.

  • Skill and knowledge to apply principles of sanitizing and disinfecting in compliance with AAALAC standards.

  • Skill to operate and maintain mechanical equipment: autoclaves, cage washers, mixers, glass washer, vehicles, janitorial equipment such as floor scrubbers, incinerator.

  • Graduation from high school or a GED and one year of laboratory experience OR two years of college including courses in the biological sciences; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Possess full complement of skills and abilities needed to measure, mix, and pour fly medium of a consistently excellent quality including, but not limited to basic math skills (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division) and hand/eye coordination.

  • Demonstrated superior organizational skills, knowledge and ability to maintain an organized facility and stocks of essential supplies, purchase supplies and equipment, oversee equipment repairs, and ensure kitchen equipment is running efficiently and maintained properly.

  • Demonstrated superior positive interpersonal oral and written communication skills using tact, diplomacy, discretion, and flexibility with diverse personalities and situations. Skill to interact effectively with faculty, academics, students, and staff including those of diverse ethnicity, culture, and foreign nationals.

  • Demonstrated English language skills to follow written and oral instructions and recipes, maintain records, and communicate efficiently and effective with customers and colleagues.

  • Demonstrated experience with Windows OS with demonstrated competency using standard business software (e.g. MS Outlook, MS Word, MS Excel), various web applications, and internet search tools. Must possess the willingness and ability to update and increase computer skills and knowledge as needed.

  • Skill and ability to prepare written protocols and procedures. Skill to meaningfully organize manuals and instruction notes for the quick and efficient retrieval and use by others.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of efficient methods of ordering, storing, and receiving perishable supplies.
