Serve under the direction of the Department of Pathology Administrative Vice Chair, Assistant Department Business Officer and Chairman as the Department Facilities and Special Projects Coordinator in matters related to space planning, moving services, equipment, safety and various special projects within the Department. Participate in the space planning process, research, gather and provide data for decision-making. Review project budgets and manage construction projects including timeline. Analyze Department of Pathology facilities projects for feasibility and budget estimates; provide data and technical information for long range planning recommendations; complete or coordinate complex space assessments and moving projects. Manage integration of new faculty members with respect to facility, IT and other needs as required. Serve as facilities resource for the Department of Pathology; working directly with faculty where necessary to develop a facilities program for labs and offices. Review existing Department of Pathology facilities management, departmental policies and procedures and provide recommendations for changes and/or additions. Oversee all maintenance issues and needs of facilities on an on-going basis.


  • Demonstrated knowledge and ability to coordinate and manage complex space planning and analysis, facilities construction, oversee project renovation, perform space utilization analysis, and project budget development. Ability to manage details of complex construction projects and moves.

  • Demonstrated problem solving ability including recognizing problems, developing potential solutions, implementing appropriate solutions, and monitoring and evaluating results or progress.

  • Demonstrated ability to analyze complex situations, data and/or issues and develop clear and concise options, recommendations or reports.

  • Strong ability to effectively communicate, in written and verbal forms, with a broad spectrum of faculty, administrators, and other officials in the University system as well as a broad variety of people outside of the University.

  • Demonstrated skill in monitoring expenditures based on established budget.

  • Ability to use online computerized systems for business processes such as purchase order submission and approval, facility maintenance requests, and fund management and monitoring.

  • Demonstrated skill in using computerized systems for facilities and furniture/equipment space planning.

  • Demonstrated skill in using common PC based software, including calendar, e-mail, word processing, spreadsheet, database and presentation software.


  • Knowledge of University-wide and UCSD organizations, policies and procedures, particularly in regard to the areas of facilities planning, management and renovation and budgetary areas. Working knowledge of University, federal, state and OP requirements for the management of inventorial property activity.

  • General knowledge of campus departments, personnel and their activities.

  • Ability to effectively read and interpret architectural plans and specifications and communicate information to laypersons.

  • Demonstrated writing excellence including the preparation of official correspondence for signature of University officials, facility project descriptions and proposals, and all manner of reports.

  • Knowledge of the UCSD construction process, including fund procurement, bid and ward of construction work, approval process, establishment of plant accounts, and inspection. Demonstrated ability to follow established Safety Guidelines.


  • Must be available to work overtime, some evenings, weekends and holidays as required by workload and project schedules.
