#86621 (NP) Bone Marrow Transplant Nurse Practitioner, PD

Under the direction of the Blood and Marrow Transplant (BMT) attending physician, the per diem Nurse Practitioner provides primary medical management for oncology/BMT patients. Leads by example demonstrating professional image and leadership core competencies. Acts as a liaison within the BMT Program to promote consistent medical management of the patients across the health care continuum by collaborating with the multidisciplinary care team. Performs specialized procedures such as bone marrow biopsy, lumbar puncture and skin biopsy. Presents patient cases during daily rounds and at the weekly BMT Clinical meetings. Provides patient/family and staff education. Supports the development and revision of BMT divisional policies and procedures. Participates in and/or initiates research. Participates in community outreach and networking with community physicians and other health care professionals. May provide care to BMT patients in the Out Patient Center and Infusion Center. Develops and expands role responsibilities as patient and system needs change.


  • Must possess the legal requirements to practice as a Registered Nurse as determined by the California Board of Registered Nursing; a current certificate of completion from a college or university-based Nurse Practitioner program; and possess the skills, knowledges and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to this position.

  • California RN license, California NP license, and accredited NP Specialty Certification (i.e. AANP, AACN).

  • Demonstrated knowledge of BMT process and hematological blood cancers, including knowledge of pathology of patient population, expected outcomes, normal and abnormal lab results.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of administration of chemotherapy and other common blood & marrow transplant medications.

  • Demonstrated leadership skills with ability to motivate team members.

  • Ability to understand the medical as well as psych-social needs of a patient population with cancer.

  • Comfort in a group teaching setting and willingness to do community outreach.

  • Excellent assessment skills and ability to make clinically sound decisions in a fast paced constantly changing environment.

  • Demonstration of a high level of professionalism and excellent verbal and written communication skills. Ability to function as part of an interdisciplinary team.


  • Experience in working with Clinical Trials and ability to identify potential Clinical Trials patients.

  • Oncology Certified Nurse Certificate, or willingness to obtain.

  • Demonstrated experience in quality improvement.

  • Advanced Oncology Certified Nurse (AOCN) certification.


  • Must be able to work various hours, days, shifts, on-call and locations based on the 24-hour Medical Center's business needs.

  • Must be able to obtain UCSD medical staff privileges.
