DESCRIPTION

The Administrative Fellowship at UC San Diego Health is a one-year program, that provides on-the-job training in the skills and responsibilities required of an administrator in a major academic health system. Reporting directly to the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) of Innovation and Transformation, and collaboratively to the Executive Team, the Administrative Fellow assumes increasing levels of responsibility by working with administrators and staff at all levels of the organization.

Structure of the Fellowship:

The initial phase of the Fellowship program consists of rotations throughout the Health System designed to educate and orient the Fellow to the functions and structure of the organization. The Fellow will rotate with each member of the executive team. The Fellow will have the chance to meet with department managers, and key faculty; to participate in committee meetings and councils; to shadow leaders at the highest level of the organization; and to work on projects and tasks. Each rotation provides a link between a department’s role/function and relationship to other departments. The rotation experience allows the Fellow to experience and observe different managerial styles and develop a better understanding of the issues and challenges facing the Health System.

After rotations, the Fellow is encouraged to use their remaining appointment to focus on projects and management experience based on the priorities of the Health System and the interests and growth opportunities for the Fellow. Projects may include, but are not limited to:

• Program design and implementation
• Policy evaluation and procedure development
• Operational processes and workflow analysis
• Staff and line support
• Financial impact and budget review
• Compliance and regulatory assessment
• Utilization management analysis

Experiential Model:

The Fellow’s role is an active, participatory one. The Fellow attends all appropriate meetings and is involved in committee work. The feature that most distinguishes this program is the level of hands-on experience. The Fellow is able to play a role of genuine importance both in UC San Diego Health's day-to-day administrative operations, and in the overall planning of its future. The opportunities are unlimited. The individuals who complete an administrative fellowship at UC San Diego Health are in a unique position to gain entry into the field of healthcare administration and begin a dynamic career by taking advantage of their experience. All of these duties require the use of tact, strict confidentiality in the handling of sensitive information, independent judgment, discretion, and flexibility. The Fellow must be able to quickly learn new concepts and be extremely detail oriented. The Fellow will be a representative of UC San Diego Health System and should exemplify UCSD's core values.
