Reporting to the Vice Chancellor-Student Affairs, the Director-Virtual Experience & Peer Engagement Initiatives is a principal advisor to the Vice-Chancellor and Student Affairs Leadership Team, advising and leading a variety of initiatives and strategic projects that facilitates change and positively enhances access to on-campus remote and virtual student experiences at UC San Diego. Provides expert recommendations and develops short- and long-term goals and strategic plans, including the implementation of programs and policy changes to enhance the student experience. The Director leverages relationships and employs peer education and mentoring models to facilitate successful development, implementation and assessment of division-wide and campus collaborative efforts that are highly responsive, flexible and adaptable. Ensures ADA compliance and smooth day-to-day administrative operations for local, global, remote and virtual Student Experience needs, innovations and opportunities.

The Director collaborates with the Academic Divisions, the Colleges, the Graduate Division, EDI, Extension, Global Education, Career Services, Educational Innovation and other partners in the strategic planning, development and implementation of virtual and remote projects and initiatives that will be recognized as a Best Practice in virtual learning and new student experience delivery models and success. Represents the Office of the Vice-Chancellor of Student Affairs with internal and external organizations through participation in campus-wide committees, work groups and taskforces to bring to fruition enhancements in virtual, remote and peer engagement initiatives, including other complex projects and programs as required. Has the authority to make decisions within the purview of the position on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor.

The Director provides a wide range of duties and expert solutions to complex issues that require tact, sensitivity, independent judgment, discretion, and flexibility while demonstrating core values of collaboration, inclusive excellence, student-centeredness, creativity, and integrity. Provides work direction to both professional and student staff and responsible for budget oversight.


  • Bachelor's degree in education, science or related field and/or equivalent experience/training. Doctoral degree in education, science, or related field and at least five (5) years' experience directing or leading educational initiatives,preferably in an academic environment. (Preferred)

  • Expert knowledge of common organizational or research specific and other computer application programs. Demonstrated strong ability to generate various reports. Demonstrated proficiency Microsoft software applications (i.e., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Google Suite, Visio) or equivalent web-based tools.

  • Highly skilled communication and interpersonal skills to communicate with and influence others, both verbally and in writing.

  • Demonstrated commitment to cultural humility and inclusive excellence. Highly collaborative, service orientation. Excellent skills in written and oral communication, active listening, critical thinking, persuasiveness, and advising.

  • Ability to use discretion and maintain all confidentiality.

  • Highly skilled in all levels of project management. Highly capable and extensive experience in the planning and management of projects and programs.

  • Demonstrated a high level of diplomacy. Demonstrated ability to bring a sense of professional urgency, appropriate follow-up and accountability to role. Excellent judgment, tact and ability to work well with internal and external partners. Demonstrated ability to determine and address potential barriers.

  • Expert knowledge of the organization's processes, protocols and procedures and external regulatory requirements in policy domain. Demonstrated in-depth experience in conceptualizing, planning, and implementing new initiatives and programs, including policy development.

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and under pressure, to manage multiple concurrent tasks and responsibilities, and to deal with changing priorities, while maintaining personal effectiveness.

  • Expert knowledge of applicable policy analysis techniques. Extensive skills in systems-thinking and policy analysis. Demonstrated ability to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment. Proven ability to make recommendations and take actions based on understanding and judgment of all factors involved.

  • Extensive skills in short-term and long-term strategic planning, analysis, problem-solving and customer service. Demonstrated expertise to research, collect, process, interpret, and accurately and effectively present a variety of data.

  • Strong abilities in conducting relevant and historical analyses techniques and developing summarized reports. Skills in conflict management, resource and time management.

  • Strong experience and creativity in developing and implementing cutting edge best-in-class education modalities and systems.

  • Demonstrated experience in strategic planning and execution.

  • Proven ability to deliver well thought-out presentations that are persuasive, informative, and effectual to all audiences using current technology, speaking extemporaneously on a wide variety of job-related subjects to express ideas, thoughts, and opinions.

  • Ability to work independently and make independent decisions. Demonstrated strong ability in procedural and policy analysis. Experience establishing and accomplishing short- and long- term goals and objectives.

  • Experience with budget management and strong leadership skills to lead various workgroups and committees.


  • Must be able to work evenings or alternate schedules, as workload requires.

  • Must be able to travel for professional conferences.

  • Job offer is contingent on clear Background Check. ARO designation requires recurring background checks every four (4) years.
