DESCRIPTION

Under close supervision of the Assistant Dean of Student Affairs and the general direction of the Dean of Student Affairs, the Student Affairs Graduate Assistant is responsible for development, implementation, and evaluation of student programming initiatives and events that meet the goals and mission of Muir College and UCSD: a multi-stage personal development program that emphasizes leadership, and new student and transfer orientation.

The Student Affairs Graduate Assistant will have the opportunity to gain student affairs experience and develop skills and competencies in the following areas: leadership and management; project management; interpersonal communication; developing a student leadership program; development of student learning outcomes; student programs and events planning within a student development framework; and the ability to work with diverse student populations.

Under supervision, the Student Affairs Graduate Assistant will be involved in the following activities, programs, and events: 'Inspiring Muir Leadership Conference,' 'Celebrating John Muir Week,' 'Muirstock,' Spring Leadership Retreat, and Student Organization/s advising.

  • Occasional evenings and weekends may be required.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Basic knowledge of advising and counseling techniques. Ability to assess student needs. Must have a strong desire to experience and learn about Student Affairs and Student Involvement in a University setting.

  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of the needs of a diverse student population. Proven ability to adapt to the changing needs of students.

  • Demonstrated skill in training students to set goals, prioritize, plan, budget, implement, and evaluate social, cultural, and community development programs.

  • Proficient skill and knowledge of common computer application programs.

  • Proven verbal and written interpersonal and communication skills. Proven ability to work in a team environment and independently. Ability to facilitate small group discussions.

  • Excellent skills in service orientation, active listening, critical thinking, conflict resolution, and facilitating groups.

  • Strong organizational and programming skills with attention to detail. Ability to work well under pressure.

  • Ability to interpret and apply University policies, regulations and procedures. Skill in applying student development theory. Ability to foster the UC San Diego Principles of Community for a collaborative work environment.

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and interact in sensitive situations in a professional manner.
