DESCRIPTION

Creative Services and Publications (CSP) is a department within University Communications and Public Affairs (UCPA) at UC San Diego. Each year, CSP produces hundreds of communication pieces on behalf of UC San Diego including comprehensive web and new media work, the full range of traditional print design and publishing, art direction, brand development, copy writing and editing, photography, video production, project consultation and management. CSP provides leadership for the campus brand, overseeing and being the primary decision maker in questions about use of the UC San Diego brand and campus strategic marketing.

Creative Services and Publications also operates Studio Ten 300, a state-of-the-art broadcast studio that links UC San Diego’s world-class faculty to media organizations. The Executive Director of CSP manages the department and plays a key leadership role in the development and implementation of campus communication initiatives, advertising, brand, and graphic guidelines, including marketing and branding for UC San Diego Alumni. CSP produces communication and marketing pieces for the campus at large as well as for its individual schools, divisions, departments, and support units.

Under general supervision of the Creative Director, the Art Director is responsible for the visual design for UC San Diego Alumni. Uses skills as a seasoned, experienced graphic design professional to produce creative visual solutions for a variety of print and digital projects, including but not limited to, annual reports, booklets, brochures, posters, print ads, graphic identity programs, illustrations, newsletters, invitations, signage, digital ads, and e-communications. Translates marketing strategy from Creative Director/Marketing Strategist into creative visual designs. Work requires subject matter expertise and an in-depth understanding of the audience and visual communication strategies/methods.

The Art Director serves as a design leader for Alumni marketing. Meets and consults with clients on a variety of visual communications projects including moderately complex assignments. Advises others in CSP and Alumni on the best way to implement Alumni brand standards. May lead other designers in production of campaigns.

Occasional evenings and weekends may be required.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's Degree in related area with three (3+) or more years experience; and/or a combination of education and experience.

  • Advanced knowledge of design and communications concepts and applicable software applications.

  • Advanced skills to devise broad design ideas, present them to clients, and produce results on time and within budget.

  • Advanced knowledge of production processes for a variety of media and knowledge of vendor requirements for a variety of products.

  • Demonstrated experience designing within an existing, and evolving, brand system.

  • Critical thinking skills, advanced organizational skills and proactive problem-solving/ problem resolution skills.

  • Strong presentation skills.

  • Demonstrated design, creative and artistic skills.

  • Advanced knowledge of the printing process and related production activities, including file preparation and output, prepress, and printing. Proven experience working with print vendors.

  • Advanced technical skill and knowledge in using Macintosh hardware and the Adobe Creative Cloud software suite—InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop, among others—to produce publications.

  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office software, including Outlook and PowerPoint.

  • Working knowledge of the web and web standards related to visual communication.

  • Working knowledge of major social media platforms, including Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Instagram.

  • Strong interpersonal communications skills. Active listening skills and skills to work effectively within teams and to effectively provide advanced design advice and consultation to clients on all aspects of visual communications.
