The VC–EDI, through partnership and collaboration, directs the campus efforts relative to diversity initiatives, which includes the work of the Campus Community Centers, as well as the efforts of the Center for Faculty Diversity and Inclusion.

The PATHways to STEM through Enhanced Access and Mentorship (PATHS) program is a longitudinal, high-touch, holistic support services program that facilitates the success of low income, first generation, underrepresented and other students who may be at higher risk of non-completion. PATHS offers the following service and transition programs: summer bridge, supplemental instruction, mentor led academic support, counseling and wrap around social services, learning communities, research and academic enrichment workshops on a range of topics relevant to student success and campus belonging.

In collaboration with the Director and fellow PATHS staff members, the Assistant Director serves the mission and strategic priorities of the PATHS Program while also serving those of the Office for Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion, the Office of the Chancellor, and the Office of the Executive Vice Chancellor.

Assistant Director plans, develops, monitors, and provides individualized services to PATHS students (who are underrepresented, low income, first generation college students) to help students succeed. Includes highly specialized mitigation adapted for first gen, low income, underrepresented groups, with focus on academic skills (e.g., research skills, preparation for graduate programs), and success in STEM academic programs. Additionally, this position provides operational and business system support for the program, as directed, including policy and procedure development and implementation, budget monitoring, development of systems and procedures that adhere to business policies, and ensure business transactions essential to program operations are processed in a timely and accurate manner.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Advanced experience in planning, developing, and administering enrichment programs, academic and personal development seminars, courses, and workshops.

  • Advanced experience in group dynamics, facilitation, and training; comprehensive assessment of academic preparation and personal competencies.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of the theories and practice of counseling, learning, human and career development.

  • Knowledge in how to enhance students' intellectual and personal growth and development, including critical thinking, effective communication, self-appraisal, self-esteem, clarification of values, appropriate career choices, and leadership.

  • Thorough knowledge of trends and issues facing low-income and first-generation college, underrepresented, disadvantaged, physically challenged, and under prepared students in higher education.

  • Knowledge of the methodologies used to enhance student achievement, such as collaborative teaching/learning models, strategies for effective counseling and peer mentoring, small group facilitation and training, coaching, mentoring, and advocacy.

  • Strong ability to oversee, direct, advise administrative staff on the processing of a variety of financial transactions and processes including travel, expense reporting, entertainment, purchasing, monitor budgets, etc. with knowledge of related UC polices and procedures.

  • High degree of accuracy, integrity, dependability, flexibility, use of sound judgment, diplomacy and resourcefulness, with strong work ethic. Ability to use tact, diplomacy, discretion and to maintain confidentiality in all matters.

  • Thorough knowledge of federal, state, and local requirements to provide for access, health, confidentiality, and safety; legal and ethical issues governing the delivery of counseling services.

  • Ability to use sound judgment in responding to issues and concerns. Resourcefulness in finding appropriate solutions to complex problems, operational and administrative. Use of initiative in implementing solutions or making recommendations. Ability to anticipate problems and take necessary actions to mitigate potential negative effects.
