Calit2 is one of four institutes launched in December 2000 through the California Institutes for Science and Innovation. It is an experiment in inventing the collaborative research environment for the digital future. As the UCSD Division of Calit2, the Qualcomm Institute's mission is to harness information technologies and telecommunications to improve the competitiveness of the California economy and to benefit society. Multidisciplinary teams composed of faculty, researchers, staff and students in the sciences, engineering and the arts conduct projects that involve a variety of advanced visualization venues and technologies to display, analyze and communicate information.


Under general supervision, the incumbent is responsible for the design, fabrication, assembly, micro-controller programming and testing of prototype electronic modules (e.g., custom PCBs). The technical work will include understanding the research projects undertaken at Calit2, and developing electronics modules (analog, digital, and RF) for mobile, wearable, implantable, IoT applications. The incumbent will guide and lead less-experienced students and employees in developing the electronics prototypes, and help the maintenance and servicing of the Calit2 electronics lab.


  • Bachelor's Degree in electrical and electronics engineering. One to two (1 - 2) years of industrial/research PCB design and test experiences. Master's Degree is preferred.

  • Experience designing printed circuit boards using commercial schematic capture and layout tools (e.g., Altium, Eagle, Orcad, KiCAD, DxDesigner, PADS etc.).

  • Experience with the board assembly process: identify and acquire appropriate circuit components and connectors, solder surface-mount components. Bond-wire IC chips (on occasion).

  • Demonstrated experience with embedded programming of microcontrollers, wireless modules, etc.

  • Experience with electrical/RF test equipment such as network analyzers, spectrum analyzers, high-speed oscilloscopes, signal generators etc.

  • Ability and/or interest to develop a wide range of R&D-support capabilities to become involved in multiple programs or aspects of the same program.

  • Experience with the operation of a personal computer and software application, such as Access, MS Word and Excel. Knowledge to work with and learn new software for analysis.

  • Strong effective written and verbal communication skills. Ability to instruct others in experimental techniques.

  • Ability to adhere to established UCSD guidelines for safety and environmental issues.
