As an Organized Research Unit of UC San Diego, the San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC) is considered a leader in data-intensive computing and cyberinfrastructure, providing resources, services, and expertise to the national research community, including industry and academia. Cyberinfrastructure refers to an accessible, integrated network of computer-based resources and expertise, focused on accelerating scientific inquiry and discovery. SDSC supports hundreds of multidisciplinary programs spanning a wide variety of domains, from earth sciences and biology to astrophysics, bioinformatics, and health IT. SDSC launched Comet, a petascale supercomputer that joins the Center’s data-intensive Gordon cluster. SDSC is a partner in XSEDE (eXtreme Science and Engineering Discovery Environment), the most advanced collection of integrated digital resources and services in the world.
The Research Data Services (RDS) Division of SDSC is responsible for providing a full range of CI services funded by recharge, contracts and grants and state funds. Services provided by the division include: Co-Location facility; server hosting and management (Windows, Linux and Solaris); Microsoft and Virtualized Services, networking; desktop support services; and data storage.
Incumbent will apply skills as a seasoned, experienced systems infrastructure professional with a full understanding of industry best practices and Campus, medical center or Office of the President policies and procedures to resolve a wide range of issues that are moderately complex in scope. Incumbent will select methods and techniques to obtain solutions. This person will evaluate new technologies including performing simple to moderate cost/benefit analyses.
As a systems administrator for the platforms group at the San Diego Supercomputer Center, incumbent will perform moderately complex system administration tasks such as hardware acquisition, system integration, patching, backups, upgrades and system restarts. Supported systems include: virtualized services; Windows, Linux, and OSX, laptops, and servers; network and local storage arrays; and high performance networks. Incumbent will write complex scripts, automates processes, performs hardware troubleshooting, software support, and other systems analysis and administration tasks. Incumbent will serve as part of a coordinated user support team that works directly with users to triage, diagnose, fix, and escalate appropriate issues. Incumbent will evaluate, diagnose and troubleshoot system problems and provides Tier 2/Tier 3 support to problem resolution. Lastly, incumbent will be responsible for educational and outreach efforts of SDSC by assisting staff with developing and delivering training, consulting, tours, or seminars.

Bachelor’s degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
Demonstrated knowledge of cloud technologies, especially object-based file systems, block storage, virtualized and elastic compute.
Demonstrated experience writing and editing complex scripts used to perform system maintenance and administration. Ablity to program using perl and UNIX shell scripting as well as common programming languages.
Demonstrated experience with large data storage arrays (more than100TB), and methods to administer, monitor and upgrade.
Strong understanding of VMware ESXi hypervisors, vSAN distributed storage, and NSX advanced firewall products.
Advanced knowledge of computer security best practices and policies including demonstrated experience securing server-based software.
