DESCRIPTION

The mission of the Department of Family Medicine and Public Health is to improve Public Health through preventive, behavioral, epidemiologic and clinical research, education and clinical care. With over $25 million in research grants, our award-winning faculty conduct innovative Public Health research at the intersection of behavioral and medical sciences to: assess and understand chronic disease etiology, improve human health; and prevent disease at the individual and population level.

The Academic Program Manager position maintains overall responsibility for the leadership and management of all aspects of the Coordinating Center for the International Physical Activity and Environment Network (IPEN), as well as other projects existing concurrently in the field of built environment and physical activity/health research. The Academic Program Manager will be responsible for the execution and oversight of the highly complex international Coordinating Center of research studies occurring concurrently in 15-20 countries, in addition to the oversight and management of numerous US-based research projects in both pre- and post-award stages. Projects are supported by federal, state, international and private funders in the form of grants, contracts, gifts, and service agreements.

Administers all finance, human resources and facilities and other operational activities for small to midsized academic or research program. Administers major program components, and some or all of the program's operational requirements. Develops and organizes conferences and other public forums. Works under direction of Principal Investigator or more senior Academic Program Officer to establish center agenda, funding, objectives

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Three years of experience in academic program management.

  • Advanced degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.

  • Demonstrated experience in managing small to mid-size programs. Prior experience in program/project management. Demonstrated experience managing and overseeing staff, interns, students, contractors, and inter-disciplinary research teams. Proven ability to recognize problems, develop solutions, and evaluate results or progress.

  • Thorough knowledge of administrative, budgetary, human resources and financial principles and practices. Demonstrated experience in contract and grant development and reporting, including federal grants. Experience with NIH and other grant organizations' procedures, guidelines and regulations. Experience with budget preparation for pre and post awards and monitoring budget expenses.

  • Strong ability to work collaboratively with internal and external peers and managers.

  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work with diverse groups to achieve results.

  • Strong oral and written communication skills.

  • Strong ability to think creatively and independently on concepts requiring advanced analytical skills.

  • Additional knowledge based requirements: familiarity with the research fields of built environment (macro and micro), active living, mental health and physical activity including subjective and objective measures commonly used in these fields (e.g., GIS, pedestrian audits, accelerometers, self-reported measures of physical activity, sedentary behaviors, and mental health).

  • Knowledge and experience coordinating multi-site international studies. Experience working with collaborators in numerous geographic locations, including international partners, in order to meet project goals.

  • Comprehensive and sophisticated knowledge of computers and various software packages including proficiency with MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, and Publisher. Demonstrated ability to perform and carry out analyses (e.g., repeated measures, mixed regression) using SPSS or other statistical software packages. Working knowledge of GIS.

  • Track record of authorship of scientific manuscripts, including first authored publications.

  • Demonstrated ability to oversee completion of all phases of research projects.

  • Demonstrated knowledge with human subjects guidelines and requirements and with research protocols.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master's degree in social science, public health or related field and at 5 years of experience in the public health, built environment and/or physical activity research field.

  • Terminal degree in a related field preferred (PhD, JD, MD, etc.).

  • Academic background and experience in selected area of research.

  • Solid fundraising experience.
