Under supervision, the Clinical Research Coordinator will be assigned to coordinate multiple federally sponsored research studies involving human subjects that are being conducted at the AntiViral Research Center (AVRC). Assist with initiation, implementation and management of clinical trials, with an emphasis on HIV, HBV and HCV trials. This position will perform HIV counseling and testing; STI testing; communicable disease notification; and partner notification on group of high risk research subjects. Ensure compliance with goals and objectives of research protocols and with state and federal regulatory guidelines. Duties include but not limited to: interpreting research protocols; recruiting subjects; screening for eligibility including obtaining vital signs, ECGs, height and weight, and blood draws; obtaining oral and rectal swabs for STI's; monitoring and timely reporting of adverse events; toxicities and protocol deviations; scheduling subjects’ visits; coordinating clinical, laboratory and data activities; processing and submitting laboratory specimens; collecting and entering research data; maintaining accurate and complete clinical research files and patient medical charts; notifying sexual partners of the possibility of STI's, risk for HIV transmission, etc. Act as liaison between Principal Investigators, the HRPP and study sponsors.


  • Theoretical knowledge or Bachelor’s degree in a biological life science or related discipline or equivalent education and experience.

  • Must be certified by the state of CA to perform phlebotomy and have experience both in the clinic and field drawing blood on research subjects.

  • Must speak and write Spanish fluently.

  • Demonstrated experience in the clinical research setting, including protocols, principles, and standards. Demonstrated experience planning and performing clinical research studies, particularly trials involving patients with HIV, HCV or TB.

  • Knowledge of signs, symptoms, pathology of HIV infection, Hepatitis B & C infection and STI's.

  • Demonstrated experience performing HIV testing and counseling.

  • Demonstrated experience interpreting laboratory values to determine subject’s eligibility and potential toxicities and insight to know when abnormalities should be reported to a clinical nurse or Physician.

  • Demonstrated experience in interpreting medical charts and extracting accurate data from medical records


  • Demonstrated understanding of Acute and Early HIV infection including signs and symptoms involved.


  • Must be willing to work with human biological samples including blood, urine, saliva, semen, sputum that is potentially infectious.

  • Must be willing to work with patients with HIV, HBV/HCV, and STI's.

  • Criminal background check.

  • Pre-employment physical.
