Depending on experience of the selected candidate, this position will be hired at the Physician Assistant or Sr. Physician Assistant level.
Under the direction of the Director of the UC San Diego Comprehensive Breast Health Center, the Senior Physician Assistant will function as a provider of patient care on specific in- and out-patient services.
Incumbent will assist in medical oncology clinics, and will have a heavy presence in the surgical arena, functioning as a surgical assistant in the operating room, in the clinics, and on the wards, all in coordination with established surgical services. Direct supervision will occur by assigned attending surgeons and medical oncologists.
The position requires a strong emphasis on the complete care of the surgical patient, from pre-to post-op settings. Skills and knowledge in the fields of surgery and oncology, preferred, but not required.
A current California Physician Assistant (PA) license.
BART or BLS/CPR certification at time of hire with commitment to get BART within six (6) months of hire date.
Theoretical background in anatomy, physiology, general medicine including basics in pulmonary, emergency and critical care medicine, management of common diseases, concepts of medicine and surgery - in particular wound care, therapeutics, including pharmacology, counseling techniques and interpersonal dynamics.
Ability perform initial history, and physical examination, identify major medical problems, and formulate appropriate plans of action.
Ability to assess the daily status and progress of patients and report this effectively to the physician in-charge and other medical care personnel associated with the patient.
Knowledge of medical ethics and law practices, pertaining to medical and medical socioeconomics.
Ability to communicate effectively with patients and other health care personnel, and skill at providing clear written, verbal and telephone communication with a wide variety of people.
Recent surgical experience.
Knowledge necessary for instructing house staff, medical students, physicians, nurses and other medical personnel in all aspects of acute and chronic care.
Skill to operate appropriate medical equipment, i.e., central venous pressure monitors, electrocardiography machines, cardiac defibrillator, transducer systems, digital read-out equipment, and medical computer systems.
Must be willing to work flexible, variable hours with the ability to change schedule on short notice.
May require occasional evening and weekend hours beyond the normal workday.
Must be able to obtain UCSD medical staff privileges.
