DESCRIPTION

The Department of Medicine (DOM) is the largest department within the UC San Diego School of Medicine (SOM) and is responsible for fulfilling its teaching, research, and clinical missions. DOM employs approximately 500 salaried faculty, nearly 200 academic appointees, and more than 300 residents, fellows, and postdocs, supported by almost 1,000 staff members. The Business Services Office (BSO) functions within DOM Administration and interfaces with data and individuals throughout the Department, SOM, campus, and Health System, regarding financial and operational matters.

Perform at full operational skill level, complete experiments in DNA/RNA modifications, cell signaling and characterize interactions involving nucleotide deaminase enzymes and other proteins in the fields of cancer stem cell biology. Run and establish experiments making technical determinations and/or observations related to research projects. Perform DNA/RNA extraction, PCR, cell-based assays, cell culture, protein blotting, and flow cytometry on primary patient samples and cell lines. Generate protocols for non-standard procedures. Data processing and presentation of statistical analysis.

Contribute to lab management administration, compliance, and maintenance including managing biohazard use authorization and serve as area safety coordinator, providing routine laboratory equipment maintenance, order and maintain supplies and equipment and oversee undergraduate part-time lab aides whose duties include washing glassware and making buffers for the lab. As this is a new lab, they will initially be required to help the set up of the lab with equipment purchase and installation. Take the initiative to understand relevant literature and contribute to primary discovery intended for grant applications and renewals.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Theoretical knowledge in biomedical and biochemical sciences or related field as typically acquired by a Bachelor's degree; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Experience and ability to initiate and maintain multiple different eukaryotic cell lines including freezing, thawing, storage, and plating cells in preparation for experiments. Experience with sterile techniques, troubleshooting of contamination problems, and care of incubators and liquid nitrogen freezers.

  • Theoretical knowledge of molecular biology techniques and genetics and experience in extracting DNA/RNA, PCR, PT-PCR, qPCR.

  • Experience in protein chemistry/purification, gel electrophoresis and transfers, various gel and membrane stains, western blots, and densitometry and analysis on resulting data.

  • Demonstrated experience with immunohistochemistry.

  • Histology processing, embedding, sectioning, and staining.

  • Proven experience with mouse handling, surgeries, anesthesia, injections, euthanasia, and tissue harvest.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills over a wide range of situations and individuals needed to interact professionally and effectively in the work environment in person, on the phone, and in writing to a diverse population; including persons from foreign countries, the business community, academicians, students and staff with a high degree of diplomacy, mature judgment, tact, and flexibility.

  • Strong knowledge of proper formats, grammar, and spelling in English and proofreading ability sufficient to compose, edit, and publish professional correspondence as well as effectively and accurately document research procedures. Ability to read, comprehend, discuss, and present research materials.

  • Organizational skills to order and maintain lab reagents and supplies, and keep accurate lab records and computer files. Experience in ordering, maintaining, trouble-shooting, and calibrating general laboratory equipment (e.g. centrifuges, incubators, microscopes, water baths, etc).

  • Proficient experience with the operation of a personal computer and software applications, such as Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access), Photoshop, Acrobat.

  • Experience with gel/blot imaging and microscopic imaging techniques for both fluorescence and bright field applications and with digital histology image software assisted image processing and analysis.

  • Experience with UCSD ordering, EH&S, and facilities policies and business systems.

  • Ability to run, operate, and maintain flow cytometry machines, PCR thermocyclers, affinity chromatography columns, ultracentrifuges, and Mass Spectrometry tandem HPLC and other related hardware.
