The Department of Anesthesiology employs over 200 academic and staff personnel and has an annual operating budget of $83 million in (School of Medicine and CPO) resources between Practice Plan Revenues, VAMC funding, Hospital and Medical Group Funding, UC Foundation, Research Sources and School of Medicine Funds. There are over 85 clinical faculty, 20 Ph.D. faculty, 8 Postdoctoral Scholars, 42 residents, 16 Clinical fellows, 33 Certified Nurse Anesthetists, 1 Physician Assistant, 1 Nurse Practitioner and five bargaining units represented. The Department provides Clinical Anesthesia, Critical Care and Pain Services at Hillcrest, Thornton, Shiley, Children's, Jacob's Medical Center and the VAMC. The Department operates a Pain Clinic at Perlman. The Department's research programs include bench and clinical research programs located at the VAMC, MTF, CTF, BSB, Hillcrest, Thornton, Sanford Consortium for Regenerative Medicine and the Altman CTRI.
Under supervision, the Nurse Anesthetist provides experienced anesthetic services and airway management for the UC Medical Center in Hillcrest, the La Jolla Campus hospitals and all other UC San Diego Health locations. The workweek consists of 7 consecutive days, from 12:00 A.M. Sunday to 11:59 P.M. the following Saturday. This position requires on-call availability and off-shift assignments. The services are performed under the general direction of the medical faculty. The CRNA provides anesthesia services to patients of all ages. The CRNA
perform operational level duties as recognized by the American Society of Anesthesiologists.
Depending on experience of the selected candidate, this position will be hired at the CRNA or Sr. CRNA level.

Must be a graduate from an accredited nurse anesthesia program.
Must possess a valid California RN and CRNA license in accordance with and accessible on the California Board of Registered Nursing website.
Must possess a current board certification as a Nurse Anesthetist, in accordance with the AANA or NBCRNA.
BLS/CPR and ACLS certifications at time of hire with commitment to get ART within six (6) months of hire date.
Theoretical background in anatomy, physiology, neurosciences general medicine, pulmonary, emergency or critical care medicine, management of common diseases, concepts of medicine and surgery, pharmacology, or counseling techniques and interpersonal dynamics.
Demonstrated ability to perform initial history and physical examination, identify major medical problems, and formulate appropriate plans of action.
Proven ability to maintain detailed medical information in an organized and easily retrievable manner using online medical systems such as Epic. Ability to analyze and interpret data in a meaningful and accurate manner.
Excellent writing skills to prepare clear and concise medical reports, laboratory data and progress notes as well as policies, procedures and protocols for patient care management.
Experience to write accurate orders regarding execution of inpatient or outpatient plans of treatment.
Thorough experience with pre-anesthetic preparation and evaluation, anesthetic induction, maintenance and emergence.
Demonstrated experienced providing anesthesia services and airway management according to level of expertise and providing anesthesia patient care to all ages.
Expertise rendering anesthesia/anesthesia related care to facilitate diagnostic, therapeutic or surgical procedures in a trauma setting. Experienced with post-anesthetic care as a member of the hospital team.
Strong communication skills that facilitate professional, effective, and courteous interaction with a diverse population. Ability to maintain confidentiality and follow strict HIPAA guidelines.
Exceptional interpersonal skills including tact, diplomacy and flexibility. Ability to work independently and/or in a team framework, and in an environment with diverse population of patients, families, physicians, and colleagues.
Proven experience to properly and compassionately counsel patients and families, particularly in delicate or death and dying situations.
- Recent experience with complex anesthetic cases.
- Experience and knowledge of clinical and ancillary services within the UCSD Medical Center.
- Working knowledge of operating room standards and techniques, and of all types of treatment and modalities necessary for patient care and well-being.
- Familiarity with patient centered perioperative management such as ERAS.
- Ability to place central and arterial lines independently as needed for appropriate anesthetic management.
- Must be able to obtain UCSD medical staff privileges and maintain during employment. Due to advanced practice credentialing eligibility, clinical advanced practice experience must be within the last two years gained through school or work experience.
- Must be willing to work at all UC San Diego Health locations.
- Employment is subject to a criminal background check and pre-employment physical.
- Must be able to work various hours, days, shifts, on-call and locations based on the 24-hour Medical Center's business needs. Must be able to work a mixed shift work schedule.
- Most shifts are 7a-7p; however, some shifts may be 9a-9p, 10a-10p, or 11a-11p based on business needs.
