DESCRIPTION

UC San Diego Health seeks a dynamic, experienced, collaborative and progressive physician leader with demonstrated capability to serve as the Chief Medical Officer (CMO). This individual will serve a thriving and robust clinical enterprise that is one of the top-rated healthcare organizations in the nation. The CMO will be primarily responsible for the advancement of clinical care excellence at both UC San Diego Medical Center in Hillcrest, as well as the state-of-the-art Jacobs Medical Center in La Jolla.

UC San Diego Health is consistently recognized as a Vizient Top 10 performing academic medical center, and the CMO will play a pivotal role in maintaining this prominence. Surrounded by some of the country’s best minds focused on healthcare information technologies, systems development and implementation as well as population science, the new CMO will lead the advancement of excellence in clinical care, including regulatory, patient and clinician satisfaction, quality and safety, and medical affairs. The CMO will build relationships with senior leaders at UC San Diego Health, the UC San Diego School of Medicine, and UC Health, guiding the comprehensive, strategic and tactical planning of quality, safety, and performance excellence programs.

The successful candidate will have a substantive track record of leadership in a complex, high performing academic medical center. They will have intimate knowledge of clinical practice, quality and patient safety, an understanding of the business of healthcare, and will earn the respect of peers and colleagues through professional achievement and fairness. A Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree is required, as is completion of an ACGME approved residency program in any medical specialty with current Board Certification; active engagement in clinical practice is a requirement. An advanced degree in healthcare or a business related field is desired.

The CMO serves as a key physician leader and member of the executive team partnering with administrative leaders, including the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO), Chief Clinical Officer (CCO), Associate Chief Medical Officers (ACMO), and department chairs in defining, measuring and driving quality and clinical excellence in care delivery, with emphasis on patient outcomes and developing a structure that ensures success. In this capacity, the CMO will guide the coordination and enhancement of medical practice standards and quality assurance systems to translate into high performance across key metrics.

The CMO will lead clinical activities at UC San Diego Health, be adept at managing change and responsible for implementing the strategic and operational initiatives across the spectrum of inpatient care. This physician leader will oversee the System's medical staff and quality structures, assuring excellence in clinical operations and compliance with regulatory and accreditation requirements. In addition, the CMO will play a key leadership role in improving patient services and leading the improvement in physician alignment and satisfaction. As a leader in UC San Diego's transformation care journey, the CMO will lead evidence-based programs, practices and activities that deliver quality, service and financial results.

As UC San Diego Health transitions to value based care, the CMO will integrate care models to improve efficiency across the System's two campuses to benefit physicians and the populations they serve. Additionally, the CMO will be the conduit between practicing physicians and the leadership team. They will work to build effective and influential relationships throughout the System and ensure that physician leaders are being developed, engaged and aligned in achieving the organization's strategic objectives.

The ultimate objective of the CMO will be to implement and oversee the operational initiatives and quality goals of the System to sustain and grow excellence in delivering care, patient satisfaction and provider performance. Key to the CMO role will be the ability to develop collaborative relationships with clinical chairs, staff and leadership.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • A Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree is required. An advanced degree in healthcare administration or business-related field is preferred.

  • Completed postgraduate medical education in an ACGME approved residency program in a medical specialty with current Board Certification.

  • Current or eligible for medical licensure in California.

  • Substantial record of leadership, including ten (10+) or more years of experience in a high-performing academic medical center.

  • A distinguished practicing physician committed to maintaining an active, part-time medical practice.

  • A regionally or nationally recognized leader in clinical excellence.

  • Experience working in partnership with multiple constituents throughout an organization. This includes achieving consensus through presentations, thought leadership, partnership and relationship building throughout UC San Diego Health, School of Medicine and UC System.

  • A strong working knowledge of procedures and systems that support clinical delivery areas.

  • Experience and understanding in value-based care and the implementation of clinical protocols and reduction in cost of care through improving clinical variance.

  • Working knowledge of applicable standards and requirements of regulatory, accreditation and licensing agencies.

  • Experience in successfully leading quality and safety across the inpatient environment and the interconnectivity with the continuum of care.

  • Knowledge and experience with electronic health record systems and their integration into quality data gathering and improvement processes.

  • Thorough knowledge of national trends and key issues related to quality and patient safety.

  • Reputation as a respected clinician and leader. Clinical and leadership stature must be such as to establish immediate respect, credibility, and effective peer relationships with clinical chairs.

  • Leads through wisdom, tolerance and flexibility, maintaining an enterprise-wide focus on clinical care. A motivator and mentor capable of developing strong teams and developing others.

  • Leadership style that emphasizes the value of collaboration, communication, service, transparency and teamwork.
