The UC San Diego Department of Surgery ranks among the top surgery departments in the nation. The Department conducts cutting edge translational and clinical surgical research, while providing advanced patient care and serving the community through outreach and education programs.
One of the Department’s missions is to translate promising scientific discoveries into new and better options for the care of patients with surgical diseases. The Department supports one of the broadest ranges of research activities in the nation – from translational research in biology and therapeutics to health services research, bioengineering, and surgical education research.
The Senior Research Grant Writer will focus on supporting grant writing for faculty in the Department. The Senior Research Grant Writer reports directly to the Executive Vice Chair of Research and the Chief of Division of Surgical Sciences. Incumbent is responsible for supporting scientific writing for grant applications (to federal funding agencies, non-profit funding organizations and foundations, as well as university intramural opportunities). They will participate in writing, editing, proof-reading and formatting grant proposals for peer review.
Seven (7) years of related experience, education/training, OR a Bachelor’s Degree in related area plus three (3) years of related experience/training
Experience in grant proposal formats, preparation, submission and administration, as well as knowledge of Federal, State and private granting agency regulations. Demonstrated experience developing and delivering scientific information to small and large groups.
Thorough knowledge and ability to apply all relevant Federal, state, and university regulations, policies, and federal guidance documents. Proven experience in keeping up with new requirements for grant proposals, such as formats and scientific components, of federal, state and private granting agencies.
Proficiency in public speaking, and writing. Strong skill in written communications including excellent English grammar and punctuation, syntax skills; detailed-oriented proofreading skill (using appropriate proofreading marks); strong skill to edit for content, spelling, punctuation, grammar, consistency, and style.
Thorough knowledge and experience with quantitative and qualitative research design; scientific research concepts and terminology. Advanced knowledge in biology or other life sciences or engineering field
Demonstrated experience working in academic research environment and clinical settings with theoretical knowledge of chemistry, biology, genetics or related field.
Strong interpersonal skills for dealing with a diverse group of people including but not limited to co-workers and UCSD departments, faculty, scientific collaborators and sponsors. Excellent skills to communicate effectively, diplomatically, and professionally, both orally and in writing.
Computer proficiency, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, cloud based systems and various database programs. Proficient knowledge and skill in software, specifically spreadsheet and word processing.
Strong problem solving skills with ability to provide innovative solutions. Skill in analyzing information, situations, practices, or procedures to define the problem or objective, identify relevant factors, formulate logical and objective conclusions, and recognize alternatives and their implications.
Proven experience with policy and procedure generation and implementation. Ability to interpret and disseminate information on a wide variety of complex policies from various organizations.
Demonstrated experience in writing and assembling team science research grants.
Demonstrated experience in writing about science for both expert reviewers and the public.
Demonstrated ability to identify potential sources for grant applications.
Sound understanding of the role of research in a major research university and its links with campus, national and international communities and industry.
- Experience with NIH grant submissions and NIH policies and procedures.
- Experience developing and implementing quality management plans for research data.
- Experience with academic review processes to include coordination of academic review file submission, maintaining up-to-date electronic curriculum vitae, bibliography, course review materials and professional materials, ensuring all materials are in the proper format; published articles, book chapters, and abstracts.
- Experience with protocol design and implementation.
- Conflict of Interest: Understanding of stock options, consulting agreements and other corporate documents related to research and analysis of potential conflicts of interest.
- Experience with complex calendaring, travel, and event coordination, facilitating meetings and scheduling conference calls and webinars.
