DESCRIPTION

Involves the development and administration of a systematic program designed to reduce risk and injury. Manages the identification, analysis and assessment of loss potential throughout the facility, identifies legal risks related to professional, employment and comprehensive general liability. Evaluates and advises on trends of professional, employment and comprehensive general liability claims experience to the administrative and medical staff. Makes recommendations concerning professional conduct, standards of care and facility operation to reduce exposure to liability and insurance claims. May represent the organization in litigation and non-litigated matters and coordinates with attorneys, third party administrators and UC Office of the President.

As recognized expert, regularly advises management on methods to reduce exposure to liability and insurance claims, across the medical center or health system. Leads and conducts complex risk analyses with broad impact. Establishes relationships with key internal and external stakeholders to develop actions to reduce risk and injury.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Defines the process and methodologies of the risk management program for the medical center or system. Establishes relationships with stakeholders across the medical center or health system to develop and implement actions to reduce risk and injury. Consults with staff on health care laws, UC, and hospital policies.
  • Regularly leads and conducts complex and varied analyses of issues or concepts with broad impact. Uses data to evaluate the organizations' compliance with risk management goals. Performs legal research related to risk management operational issues. Investigates events for potential liability.
  • Instrumental in the effort to develop risk management annual plans. Makes recommendations for department goals and long-term strategy Provides support to on-going reviews and revises existing hospital administrative policies.
  • Ensure policies and processes reflect new developments, updated regulatory requirements, and best practice methodologies. Regularly leads and guides upper management on risk management matters, impacting the entire organization. Informs risk leadership on a regular basis about areas of risk exposure and plans to address those exposures.
  • As recognized expert, provides strategic guidance on process to Management. Identifies areas for improvement and develops methods for assessing internal and external compliance, risk and increased efficiency. Participates in committees and taskforces on developing hospital policies across a broad spectrum, including Performance Improvement, Patient Safety, and Ethics.
  • Mentors and coaches professionals. Assists Professionals in developing and acquiring documentation skills and abilities. Encourages development in a risk management specialty and continuing education opportunities to develop analysis techniques. Responsible for any reporting to federal agencies necessary under Enterprise Risk Management (ERM).
  • Represents the medical center in small claims court disputes, prepares and presents witnesses, writes briefs for small claims matters that are outside the UC Regents self-insured programs. Manages subpoenas. Develops appropriate responses for individuals with questions regarding subpoena actions. Supports faculty and staff in responding to licensing board issues.
  • Conducts and analyzes reports related to special risk management investigations. Monitors claims and incidents for early interventional opportunities to mitigate exposure and prevent further events.
  • Works with Office of Risk Management and Office of the President to administer professional liability program.
  • Makes recommendations for risk management standards, goals, strategy and planning, supporting recommendations with deep industry and technical knowledge. Establishes new and innovative ways to monitor and measure outcomes, improve quality control, utilize technology or systems, etc. Regularly leads and facilitates workgroups.
  • Participates in developing and presenting extensive in-service training programs for staff and physicians on risk management principles, healthcare law, policies. Writes articles related to department developments.
  • Other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree in business, healthcare administration or related area, and / or equivalent combination of experience / training.
  • Seven or more years of relevant experience.
  • Experience with and expert knowledge in clinical risk management theory and industry trends.
  • Demonstrated ability to apply knowledge and skills to recommend innovative, industry leading improvements to risk management processes and procedures.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Advanced degree; nursing and/or legal.
  • Professional certification.
