Depending on the experience of the selected candidate, this position will be hired at the Research Development Engineer 2 or Research Development Engineer 3 level.

DESCRIPTION

The mission of the Center for Epigenomics at UC San Diego is to develop a quantitative and molecular framework to study the function and regulation of the human genome, with the ultimate goal to understand the molecular basis of cancer and other human diseases. Epigenomics is at the forefront of Precision Medicine. The epigenome, a term referring to the state of DNA methylation and the covalent modifications of histone proteins in a cell, plays a central role in regulating the functional output of the genome during development. Changes in the epigenome that result from exposure to stress, pathogenic conditions and during aging can determine the patterns of gene expression and predispose an individual to diseases. Epigenome research promises to significantly improve our understanding of the factors that drive human development and disease. The UCSD Center for Epigenomics will work with researchers on the UCSD campus and beyond to foster the application of epigenomic concepts and technologies to clinical, translational, and basic research.

The newest Functional and Spatial Genomics technology platform of the Center focuses on profiling epigenomics in their native tissue context to understand each cell’s function. We have implemented latest epigenomic robotics and analytical tools to acquire spatial genomics information on gene regulation and chromatin organization. Under the direction of the Associate Director, the R&D Engineer will independently set up a platform for high-throughput imaging and functional genomics. The incumbent will play a key role in establishing advanced Fluorescence In Situ Hybridization (FISH)-based imaging technologies to conduct high throughput, spatially resolved single cell analysis of transcriptomics and chromatin structure.

The incumbent will independently perform integration and testing of subsystems such as fluidics system, imaging system, control software, and image analysis. The incumbent will independently collect data, analyze data, present findings, trouble shoot, maintain the system performance and develop new methods to improve system performance. The incumbent will work with other researchers to design project and perform experiments using the established imaging system. Additionally, the incumbent will oversee general laboratory duties and will maintain lab equipment, order supplies, ensure cleanliness of lab, maintain records and perform other general lab duties as needed. Demonstrates good judgment in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Six years of related experience, education/training, OR a Bachelor’s degree in related area plus two years of related experience/training.

  • Thorough knowledge and experience with engineering principles and methods to independently perform the full range of engineering professional design work. Solid background in optical science and engineering, with comprehensive optics and system knowledge.

  • Extensive knowledge of precision optical system design, solid understanding and practical knowledge of microscopic imaging system and experience of system level design. Hands-on experience with various optical components including light source, sensors, and imaging modalities, and opto-mechanical integration. Familiar with advanced microscopy technology, such as super-resolution microscopy, light-sheet microscopy, etc. is a plus.

  • Thorough knowledge necessary to apply principles, practices and procedures in the completion of assignments. Proven experience with design of microfluidics systems including integrated microchannel systems with pumps/valves, microchannel flow characterization methods. Experience with assembling fluidics systems for characterization and implement control/automation routines using software.

  • Strong analytical and judgment skills to independently conduct analyses and develop appropriate recommendations. Ability to carry out data analysis using scripts written in Python or Matlab, trouble shooting and problem solving in building complex and interdisciplinary instruments.

  • Demonstrated experience with image processing for fluorescence microscopic images. Deep knowledge of high-throughput instrumentation methods for biological studies.

  • Effective written and verbal communication and presentation skills. Excellent skill in word, PowerPoint, Excel, Image J.

  • Proven ability to work in a collaborative manner; identify challenges and barriers and recommend resolutions. Ability to lead and influence others.
