The Clinical Nurse Educator will serve as an expert nursing clinician, educator, researcher, consultant and leader for nursing staff, patients, families and members of inter-professional health care teams. Collaborates with the nursing leadership team and inter-professional team to ensure cost-effective professional practice standards within the patient population based on best practices and evidence. Will be involved in education and practice on a system-wide level. Supports activities to improve nursing sensitive indicators.

This position is for the Medicine and Surgery service lines within UC San Diego Health. The Clinical Nurse Educator will interface with Med/Surg, PCU and ICU levels of care.

The Clinical Nurse Educator applies extensive knowledge of clinical education and training practices to develop and deliver education and training content for all levels of clinicians, primarily nurses, at the medical center. Mentors nurse educators and functions as a leader and information resource. Holds in-depth specialty knowledge within a nursing discipline. Leads or oversees the implementation of new programs.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Researches best practices and develops tools for education and training needs assessment. Collaborates with nursing leadership to conduct needs assessments, evaluate nurse competencies and skills, and target education and training planning.
  • Develops, plans, and delivers a curriculum for target audiences by evaluating clinical protocols, standards of care, practice guidelines and policies, and procedures within clinical specialties.
  • Works with nurse leadership to design and implement tools for validating nurse competencies. Ensures that competencies reflect organizational goals, such as providing patient population specific care, leadership development, and sensitivity to patient cultural differences.
  • Works with nursing leadership to develop and establish a variety of nursing staff orientation and education and training programs. Utilizes a broad variety of media and formats to ensure that programs are appropriately developed for all target audiences.
  • Develops and implements processes to ensure that nursing education and training activities are compliant with all legal and certification requirements, and medical center and organizational standards of care. Responds to regulatory mandates for research and management of significant events.
  • Advances nursing expertise by pursuing professional development, encourages ongoing staff development, continuing education, and training. Keeps abreast of regulatory and procedural changes related to clinical education and training programs.
  • Participates in committees, task forces, and projects that evaluate a broad variety of issues, including quality of care, patient safety, and licensure and accreditation requirements.
  • Works with nursing leadership to apply best practice and nursing research data to improve clinical practice and outcome assessments.
  • Other duties as assigned.

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN).
  • Registered Nurse (RN) issued by the state of California.
  • BLS/CPR and ACLS certification at time of hire with commitment to get ART within 6 months of hire date.
  • Five (5) or more years of RN experience.
  • Acute care RN experience.
  • Experience and proven success in developing and delivering clinical nursing education and training material for orientation, class training and skills / competency learning and leadership development.


  • MSN
  • Recent ICU RN experience (within the past five years).
  • Current professional nursing certification or must obtain within one year of hire.
  • Experience in a teaching hospital.
  • Experience working in a Magnet Hospital.
  • Experience with electronic health records.


  • Must be able to work various hours, days, shifts, on-call and various locations based on the 24-hour Medical Center's business needs.
  • Must obtain specialty certification within one year of hire.
  • Employment is subject to a criminal background check and pre-employment physical.
