UC San Diego and UC San Diego Library are in a time of growth and renewal. The campus plan includes growing student enrollment and leveraging the University’s role as a destination and center of innovation. The recently completed Library organizational review resulted in the reframing and concurrent recruitment of senior leadership roles as well as the renewal of Library strategic priorities. The UC San Diego Library, ranked among the top 25 public academic research libraries in the nation, plays an integral role in advancing and supporting the University's research, teaching, patient care, and public service mission. The goal of the Library is to serve the University’s vision to be a student-centered, research-focused, service-oriented public university. The Library accomplishes this through support of student and faculty success, through support of research and learning with information resources, by serving as a place of community and inspiration, and by extending the impact of UC San Diego research through investments and innovation in scholarly communication and research data. In service of these priorities, UC San Diego Library employs 180 staff and maintains an annual budget of approximately $32 million. The UC San Diego Library is seeking creative, strategic and collaborative applicants for the position of Chief Administrative Officer, Library Operations (CAO). Reporting to the University Librarian and working with a team of senior leaders, program directors and staff, this role provides leadership for the Library’s and the university’s vision to be a student-centered, research-focused, service-oriented public university. The successful candidate will be a leader capable of connecting Library strategic priorities with campus initiatives and will possess expertise in managing business, employee and financial services in a large and complex academically-focused organization. Ideal candidates bring a commitment to advancing equity, diversity and inclusion across the Library and university.

The CAO leads Library operations with a focus on business and employee services, facilities, organizational development, internal communication and security. The CAO provides strategic leadership for Library operations broadly through direct reports, cross-library teams and campus partnerships. The CAO is a leader of and participant in the Library’s matrixed advisory structure which supports cross-program and library-wide communication, collaboration and initiatives. The CAO has an active role in strategic planning and development activities. In partnership with direct reports, the CAO coordinates with campus partners in areas relevant to the role including human resources, budget, facilities management and space planning. The CAO is responsible for leading initiatives that serve the Library’s commitment to provide responsive and efficient business and employee services to the Library as well as safe and inclusive facilities. In partnership with Library staff, faculty, students, campus colleagues and UC colleagues, the CAO currently leads and supports four programs and one team: (1) Business and Employee Services, (2) Facilities Services, (3) Internal Communications, and (4) Library Safety and Security and (5) Administrative Support Team.

  • Bachelor's degree in related area and/or an equivalent combination of experience and/or training. Leadership experience managing operations in a large, complex environment with specific expertise and background in one or more areas relevant to the position.

  • Thorough knowledge of financial analysis and reporting techniques, human resources and risk management planning, accounting and payroll. Expertise with budget and financial analysis and management in a large and complex academic organization.

  • Excellent ability to establish metrics for department and employee goals. Experience supervising and mentoring senior management and teams including experience in supervision of and delegation to direct reports.

  • Demonstrated experience in effectively leading and supporting organizational change, especially planning for and implementing new or evolving services and innovations.

  • Proven experience managing high-profile, complex, large-scale, and long-term projects. Experience in customer-oriented service and enhancing the user experience through feedback and user needs analysis as the basis for operational decision-making.

  • Excellent project management skills, including the capability of managing capital projects. Experience in ongoing operational coordination including planning and budgeting for major projects/initiatives and managing ongoing investments (e.g. collections budget accounting, facility renovation planning).

  • Very strong ability to quickly evaluate complex issues and identify multiple options for resolution. Capacity for senior leadership within an organization and leadership at campus, multi-campus, and regional/national levels.

  • Thorough knowledge of common organization-specific and other computer application programs. Awareness of issues impacting academic institutions, business operations, academic operations, and business systems and technologies

  • Excellent interpersonal skills to effectively lead, motivate and influence others and to develop and maintain high standards of customer service. Ability to manage diverse stakeholders and collaborate with stakeholders on strategic priorities.

  • Excellent skills to work collaboratively and act persuasively in sensitive situations; skills in conflict management techniques. Experience working in multi-departmental/organizational teams and groups and developing effective and mutually-beneficial relationships with campus partners.


  • Leadership and management experience in an academic environment.

  • Knowledge of UC governance, organizational structures and relevant UC policies.
