Depending on experience of the selected candidate, the incumbent will be hired into one of the the following areas of focus: General Ledger/Fund accounting or General Ledger/Revenue Analytics.

DESCRIPTION

Accountant V - General Ledger/Fund Accounting Focus

Involves general and fund accounting functions such as analyzing, monitoring, preparing and reconciling financial information to reflect the condition of the organization and provide financial and other statistical data to control operations. Also may involve preparation of financial reports to meet internal and external reporting requirements. May include activities relating to developing, implementing and monitoring accounting systems, policies and procedures. Will prepare statements and analysis related to grants, bonds, loans and other non-profit schedules to support legislative or University of California requirements.

Recognized organization-wide expert on fund accounting. Has significant impact and influence on organizational policy and program development in regards to accountability and appropriations based recordkeeping. Regularly leads projects of critical importance to the organization; these projects carry substantial consequences of success or failure. Directs programs with organization-wide impact (or may have impact beyond the University) that include formulating strategies and administering policies, processes, and resources. Significant barriers to entry exist at this level.

Having wide-ranging accounting-related experience, uses expert accounting concepts and standards and organization objectives to resolve complex accounting issues. Handles assignments where analysis of data requires an in-depth evaluation of variable factors and multiple sources of accounting and finance related information. Exercises judgment in selecting methods, techniques and evaluation criteria for obtaining results. Determines methods and procedures on new assignments. Internal and external contacts often pertain to accounting and financial reporting matters of significance to the department and the organization. Is considered a subject matter expert and often recognized as an expert externally in the industry. May supervise accounting team staff members.

Accountant V - General Ledger/Revenue Analytics Focus

Involves accounting functions such as analyzing, monitoring, preparing and reconciling financial information to reflect the condition of the organization and provide financial and other statistical data to control operations. Also may involve preparation of financial reports to meet internal and external reporting requirements. May include activities relating to developing, implementing and monitoring accounting systems, policies and procedures. Will coordinate 3rd party interim and annual audits, supervising audit response and ensuring the audit deadlines are adhered to.

Recognized organization-wide expert. Has significant impact and influence on organizational policy and program development. Regularly leads projects of critical importance to the organization; these projects carry substantial consequences of success or failure. Directs programs with organization-wide impact (or may have impact beyond the University) that include formulating strategies and administering policies, processes, and resources. Significant barriers to entry exist at this level. Will coordinate the development of financial reports and month –end and annual recordkeeping using the ORACLE General Ledger System recently implemented at UCSD.

Having wide-ranging accounting-related experience, uses expert accounting concepts and standards and organization objectives to resolve complex accounting issues. Handles assignments where analysis of data requires an in-depth evaluation of variable factors and multiple sources of accounting and finance related information. Exercises judgment in selecting methods, techniques and evaluation criteria for obtaining results. Determines methods and procedures on new assignments. Internal and external contacts often pertain to accounting and financial reporting matters of significance to the department and the organization. Is considered a subject matter expert and often recognized as an expert externally in the industry.

May supervise accounting team staff members OR involves the monthly review and analysis of net patient revenue of a large medical center, particularly with strong understanding of third party payments and government payors. This includes the knowledge of performing quarterly Accounts Receivable valuations, analyzing payor mix financial impacts, supporting the monthly financial close and assisting heavily in the year-end financial audit. Responsibilities will include managing a group of general ledger accountings and providing ongoing leadership and development. Experience in an academic medical center is highly desirable.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Eleven (11) years of related experience, education/training in fund accounting and/or general accounting, OR a Bachelor’s degree in related area plus seven (7) years of related experience/training in fund accounting and/or general accounting.

  • CPA.

  • Demonstrated experience and expert-level accounting-related knowledge and skills; in-depth knowledge of the accounting function.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ten (10+) plus years of experience managing people in a healthcare environment with a heavy emphasis on net patient revenue analytics.
  • Experience in the Healthcare industry.
  • Experience with Oracle, SAP, Lawson, or similar large ERP system.
  • Experience in public accounting highly desirable.
