The Department of Ophthalmology and the Shiley Eye Center at UCSD is involved in research to better understand the pathophysiology of several high profile retinal diseases such as age related macular degeneration, retinal degeneration, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, HIV retinopathy, and trauma to identify effective approaches to delivery cell therapies and drug therapeutics for early treatment and prevention. We also collaborate with outside research groups to develop sustained ocular drug delivery systems using advanced technologies such as porous silicon and various polymers as well as lipid prodrug strategy.

Under supervision of the Core Module Directors, incumbent will assist with ophthalmic photography, optokinetic tests, and ocular electrophysiology in small animal lab (rats, mice, rabbits, etc.) and assists PIs and their staff in animal imaging experiments. This position will assists with standard ophthalmic photography, OKN, OCT and SLO imaging, and functional imaging (electrophysiology). Keep accurate records, prepare usage reports of core facilities, maintain and clean imaging instruments, assist in animal welfare, export and analyze obtained data, assist interpretation of images and data.


  • Theoretical knowledge of biomedical science or a related science field with some lab experience.

  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience with animal models, injections, anesthesia, euthanasia.

  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills. Demonstrated ability to maintain quality control in research projects. Skill and ability to keep accurate records.

  • Proven skill in accurate record keeping and ability to organize, analyze, and calculate data. Knowledge in basic math for maintaining ledgers, income and expenditures reports.

  • Excellent communication skills, verbal and written, to interact professionally and effectively in the work environment; and, to effectively and accurately document research procedures.

  • Strong interpersonal skills including tact, diplomacy and flexibility. Ability to work in a team framework in conjunction with principles of community with staff, professionals, study participants/patients.

  • Ability to work independently and cooperatively. Excellent organizational skills. Ability to prioritize assignments, maintain workflow, and work productively in meeting critical deadlines.


  • Experience with ophthalmic photography.
  • Familiarity with electroretinography (ERG).
  • Knowledge of UCSD Environmental Health and Safety requirements.


  • Employment is subject to a criminal background check.
  • Must be able to work weekends and evenings as needed.
  • Must be willing to work with animals and euthanize mice.
  • Must be willing to work with human and animal tissues.
