The Department of Pediatrics is one of the largest departments within the UC San Diego School of Medicine, with approximately 280 Faculty, 130 post-doctoral fellows (both MDs and PhDs) along with over 325 support staff (not including hospital staff). In addition, the Department has 68 clinical residents and fellows distributed across the Divisions. The missions of research, education and patient care are intertwined, and are integral to the goals of the department.
The Department has undergone significant growth in recent years with a consolidated budget of approximately $183 million including sponsored projects expenditures of approximately $75 million and clinical revenue of over $ 60 million. This expansion of the Department’s research and clinical portfolio is expected to continue in the next few years.
The Department’s 16 divisions include Academic General Pediatrics, Child Development & Community Health; Allergy, Immunology and Rheumatology; Cardiology; Dysmorphology; Emergency Medicine; Endocrinology; Gastroenterology; Genetics; Genome Information Sciences; Hospital Medicine; Host-Microbe Systems and Therapeutics; Infectious Diseases; Neonatology; Nephrology; and Respiratory Medicine.
In 2001, physicians and leadership of UC San Diego (UCSD), Rady Children's, and Children's Specialists of San Diego (CSSD) unified pediatric patient care, research, education and community service programs, creating a university-affiliated children's health system to serve the region. Over the past two decades, an extensive list of joint programs has developed, with many physicians and researchers playing a role at both institutions.
This affiliation has consolidated the clinical, teaching, research and public service programs of the UCSD School of Medicine's Department of Pediatrics with San Diego's only health care system dedicated to the health and well-being of children. In 2009, this partnership was furthered by the creation of Rady Children’s Specialists of San Diego, a Medical Foundation, and is now recognized as having global leaders in research, technology, translational medicine, education and clinical excellence.
The Microbiome and Metabolomics Core at UC San Diego (MIAMC) is a core research facility overseen by the Department of Pediatrics. MIAMC provides a variety of services for microbiome researchers, including amplicon, metagenomics and metatranscriptomics library preparation, and metabolomic sample prep and mass-spectrometry analysis.
The mission of MIAMC is to provide UCSD researchers, as well as researchers at both national and international institutes, industries and organizations, with access to high quality standard, cutting-edge, and custom microbiome and metabolomics services as well as consultation on experimental design and training/education about microbiome and metabolomics methods.
The Executive Director will be responsible for the overall planning, function, and long-term support of MIAMC. Key responsibilities involve interacting with UC San Diego Life Sciences faculty and engaging them in collaborative research projects; management of Center staff (three core technical staff TBD) dedicated to collaboration or software development; reporting to UC San Diego faculty leadership and advisory boards; establishing the Center business model and leading outreach and fundraising efforts.
The Executive Director will report to Prof Jack A Gilbert as Faculty Director of MIAMC. Under the leadership of the Executive Director, MIAMC will be staffed by research personnel that specialize in high throughput microbiome and metabolomics techniques who will carry out the key functions of the core. Will independently oversee a moderately sized academic or research program and represent the program to outside organizations. Oversees all administrative operations, finance, human resources and facilities for program. Designs and develops major program components, and administers the full range of the program's operational requirements.
Works with faculty on formulating short-term planning and procedures. Develops and organizes conferences and other public forums. Works under direction of Principal Investigator to establish center agenda, funding, objectives.
Advanced Degree in related area; and/or equivalent combination of experience and training. Terminal Degree in a related field (PhD, etc.) preferred.
A minimum of five (5+) or more years of relevant experience.
Academic background and experience in selected area of research.
Extensive knowledge and experience with high throughput microbiome and metabolomics technologies and techniques.
Thorough knowledge of administrative, budgetary, human resources and financial principles and practices.
Highly skilled with fundraising experience.
Strong interpersonal skills. Ability to work with diverse groups to achieve results. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Ability to work collaboratively with internal and external peers and managers.
Ability to think strategically and creatively, to anticipate technology, and to transfer that thinking into cogent plans for large and complex multidisciplinary, multi-year projects.
Advanced knowledge of contract and grant rules and regulations, and of effective resource management to support research infrastructure acquisition and maintenance.
Demonstrated management experience in academic and/or government agencies
Proven capacity to identify sources of support for such research infrastructure resources through either state, federal, public or private sector grants and fundraising.
Advanced ability to think creatively and independently on concepts requiring advanced analytical skills.
Cutting-edge research capabilities. Possess cutting-edge knowledge in a broad range of molecular biology and metabolomics topics.
